It’s another early morning and looking at the headlines is disturbing. As America careens forward into an unknown vision of the future of our nation, the rhetoric seems to get hotter every day. Jesus said, “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand (Mark 3:24-25). These same words were used by Abraham Lincoln to address the division facing the nation during the Civil War, and many today don’t even know he was quoting Jesus. But in Lincoln’s day, people knew that the reference to the words of the Savior were meant to trigger a nation whose foundations were rooted in Christianity. And people did pray! And God healed their land!
In chaos, believers can remain secure and anchored. We need to guard our hearts and minds, particularly in a season of prayer, to not enter into the confusion. Those men and women who remain “steadfast and unmovable” in their faith know their prayers are not in vain.
Particularly, let’s pray for our president today. Pray that “the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:2). Pray that he would be a uniting voice inside our nation and move forward to secure peace and prosperity. Ask that “No weapon that is formed against him shall prosper; And every tongue that accuses him in judgment he will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me” (Isaiah 54:17). Pray that he will walk in humility because “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). And finally, pray that he would have a true faith in God through Jesus Christ–that he would become a man of prayer and of the Word.
To pray in such a way is to pray the will of God. The Scriptures say, “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior (1Timothy 2:1-3).
I’m praying for all of you who read this post. Thank you for your commitment to the Lord. Be greatly blessed.
